LinkedIn Profile Tips

After creating a LinkedIn profile, consider optimizing the profile with content and settings.

LinkedIn Parameters

There are characters limits within each profile section. The character count includes letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation. Some profile character limitations are:

Headline (title)–220 character-limit

Summary–2,000 character-limit

Recommendations–3,000 character-limit

Vanity URL–100 character-limit

The first 250 characters within the summary section are important because recruiters and other professionals will review that text. Enhance the profile with a summary showcasing your contributions, value, and skills.

Summary content can include professional accomplishments, affiliations, and other career details. If hobbies contribute to your professional story—maybe you traveled the world and are fluent in five languages— include the relevant information.

The summary tone will impact readers, so verify that your profile summary aligns with your professional goals.

Complete Profile Content

LinkedIn can help with career aspirations by building your professional network or recommending new connections. The LinkedIn engines search a profile for keywords and phrases to make connection suggestions. By creating a complete profile—adding content to several profile sections—you can enable LinkedIn to support your goals.

Use the Tool

LinkedIn is a social media tool. Like other platforms, there are benefits to participating in LinkedIn groups. If you want to be active on LinkedIn, share professional articles, contribute with helpful comments, and add photos or videos to generate visibility and to connect with professionals.

There are many reasons to join LinkedIn, and while LinkedIn offers a variety of opportunities it is not vital to career success.
